Felamimail outbound msg's rejected

List, (Using 1.6 svn)

I'm trying to track down why mail sent from egroupware attaches the local net address to the email message causing rejection from remote hosts. I know, your thinking it's my postfix config. Nope, myhostname and myorgin are set properly and the helo is correct as well. It is egroupware/felamimail.

The rejected messages show:

NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[192.168.6.17]: 550 5.7.1 Client host rejected: cannot find your hostname, [192.168.6.17]…

Of course it can't find an internal address. The 192.168.6.17 is the server's LAN IP. It has proper external DNS configuration and resolution with mail.3111skyline.com, www.3111skyline.com and nirvana.3111skyline.com all properly resolving to the WAN IP of 66.76.63.120 and dig -x 66.76.63.120 resolving to mail.3111skyline.com. (try them) The question is why was the internal IP sent outbound from fela to begin with? I don't know how felamimail acts different from any other package, but after the original send failed, I just copied the contents into kmail and it sent fine (same server hosts both egroupware and smtp, only difference was the mail client, kmail versus fela) The only thing I can think of is that egroupware is grabbing the internal address for some reason instead of just sending the domain name.

The egroupware email config uses the proper domain name (mail.3111skyline.com) so I would expect that to be what is sent with the email. Of course, internally, the hostname resolves to the internal IP, but fela shouldn't care about that. Has anyone else seen this behavior from fela lately. It seems like fela worked fine for years, but in the past 60 days or so it is like something changed? Anyone else seeing this behavior?

Nope, felamimail does not handle anything particular regarding the handling
of servernames
while sending (and the thereby resolving of servernames).
It is using the send class, which is using phpmailer and smtp which are
unchanged since
6 / 8 month.
The send class is unchanged since 8 month too.

Does kmail use eGroupwares send-class or something of its own?

kmail uses it's own. This issue is definitely specific to fela or phpmailer

because “squirrelmail” sends file (another php based mailer), kmail,
thunderbird, heck mail-x from the good old command line even sends fine.

Anything I could do to test? Fela has always been somewhat the black sheep of

the egw family. Seems to be acting up again :wink:

Maybe I can check, if there is a newer phpmailer Version around, or check
out the stuff the others use.
Basic function that is used in phpmailer and smtp class here is
$this->smtp_conn = fsockopen($host, // the host of the server
$port, // the port to use
$errno, // error number if any
$errstr, // error message if any
$tval); // give up after ? secs
whereas the host is set, in phpmailer smtpconnect.
… $hosts = explode(’;’, $this->Host);
$index = 0;
$connection = ($this->smtp->Connected());

/* Retry while there is no connection */
while($index < count($hosts) && $connection == false) {
$hostinfo = array();
if(eregi(’^(.+):([0-9]+)$’, $hosts[$index], $hostinfo)) {
$host = $hostinfo[1];
$port = $hostinfo[2];
} else {
$host = $hosts[$index];
$port = $this->Port;
}
$hostA = explode("://", $host);
if (strtolower($hostA[0]) == ‘tls’ || strtolower($hostA[0]) == ‘ssl’) {
$this->SMTPSecure = strtolower($hostA[0]);
$host = $hostA[1];
}
…
if($this->smtp->Connect(($ssl ? ‘ssl://’:’’).$host, $port, $this->Timeout))
{

$hello = ($this->Helo != ‘’ ? $this->Hello : $this->ServerHostname());

and Server Hostname is set via
/**

  • Returns the server hostname or ‘localhost.localdomain’ if unknown.
  • @access private
  • @return string
    */
    private function ServerHostname() {
    if (!empty($this->Hostname)) {
    $result = $this->Hostname;
    } elseif (isset($_SERVER[‘SERVER_NAME’])) {
    $result = $_SERVER[‘SERVER_NAME’];
    } else {
    $result = “localhost.localdomain”;
    }

return $result;
}
as we pass $this->Host but not $this->Hostname

Try setting Hostname as it might change the behavior
/**

  • Sets the hostname to use in Message-Id and Received headers
  • and as default HELO string. If empty, the value returned
  • by SERVER_NAME is used or ‘localhost.localdomain’.
  • @var string
    */

If this helps, we can build something in, to be able to configure that
value.
