EGroupware 1.6.003 maintenance release: SyncML 1.2 & PHP5.3 support

(Deutsche Übersetzung am Ende)

We (EGroupware project and Stylite GmbH) plan a maintenance release for
the stable 1.6 branch. It will include:

a) SynmML 1.2 support (Patch from Jörg Lehrke)

b) improved PHP 5.3 support (fixed tons of deprecated warnings)

c) client to submit information for a central EGroupware usage statistic
(will be explained in a separate mail)

One can discuss if these are really bugfixes, as this is what we usually
provide for a stable branch, or new features.
Feedback on mailing lists, forums and by other means let us believe
majority of our users perceive them as bugs. Therefore we decided to fix
them with a maintenance release in our stable branch too. All the fixes
are tested since some time in our development branch.

The fixes are now available via svn in 1.6 branch or via daily snapshot:
http://dev.egroupware.org/other/1.6-snapshot.tar.bz2

Please help testing them so we can have a rock-solid maintenance release
later in December, as everyone expects it from EGroupware.

Ralf

PS: Many thanks to Jörg Lehrke for developing SyncML 1.2 support and
maintaining SyncML in EGroupware now.

Das EGroupware Projekt und die Stylite GmbH planen ein Wartungsrelease
für den stabilen 1.6 Branch. Es wird folgendes enthalten:

a) SynmML 1.2 Support (Patch von Jörg Lehrke)

b) verbesserte PHP 5.3 Unterstützung (behebt unzählige “Deprecated
warnings”)

Some often asked questions:

  • How successful is this EGroupware software?
  • How many people using it?
  • What kind of organisations implementing it?

So far we could only point to sf.net:
http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=78745&ugn=egroupware&type=prdownload
http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=78745&ugn=egroupware&type=prdownload&mode=alltime&file_id=0

It show EGroupware has currently around 20 thousand downloads per month
from sf.net alone (it had sometimes been more then 80 thousand in the
past), which sum up to a total of 2 million sf.net downloads since April
2003.
Not accounted for are:

  • RPM downloads from openSUSE (for all RPM based distributions)
  • Debian, Ubuntu and other distributions containing EGroupware
  • svn checkouts

Our problem: these numbers say very little, as we dont know if people
just download it, or install and use it with hundreds of users.
Specially when dealing with the press or being compared to commercial
software, this is a problem.

As a solution we introduce now “EGroupware usage statistic”:

From 1.6.003 on every EGroupware install contains a client to submit
monthly usage data to www.egroupware-server.org. Submitting the data is
voluntary and the submitted data is displayed as clear text to the
admin, asked to submit it.

We ask for:

  • a unique ID to track growth of individual installations (+)
  • nationality of users or multinational usage
  • usage type: commercial, governmental, educational, non-profit or personal
  • number of users (*)
  • number of sessions/logins in the last 30 days (*)
  • EGroupware version (*)
  • operating system of server (*)
  • PHP version (*)
  • install type: archive, rpm/deb package, svn or other (*)
  • used applications, percentage of allowed users and number of entries (*,+)
+) data can be deleted by the administrator
    *) data is automatically determined

The cumulated and anonymised data will be publically available:
http://www.egroupware-server.org/usage-statistic

Currently the data gets only collected, there’s not yet any statistic.
I will start adding it, once we have more data.

Anyone interested in the code submitting or receiving the data:
http://svn.egroupware.org/viewvc/egroupware/trunk/admin/inc/class.admin_statistics.inc.php?view=markup
http://svn.egroupware.org/viewvc/egroupware/trunk/usage/

I hope you understand the importance for this voluntary statistic and
not deny it lightly.

Ralf

Offizielle EGroupware Nutzungsstatistik:

http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=78745&ugn=egroupware&type=prdownload
http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=78745&ugn=egroupware&type=prdownload&mode=alltime&file_id=0

tausend). Was eine Gesamtsumme von 3 Millionen Downloads seit April 2003
ergibt.

http://svn.egroupware.org/viewvc/egroupware/trunk/admin/inc/class.admin_statistics.inc.php?view=markup
http://svn.egroupware.org/viewvc/egroupware/trunk/usage/

I grabbed the snapshot and the calendar and syncml works for me. The InfoLog
preferences have become empty. (InfoLog->Preferences has 3 tabs, but no
list) There are 15 preferences on that page in 1.4.002. Preferences are
enabled for the Default group which I’m in.

Does this work for anyone else and if so, what might I be doing wrong?

Categories in InfoLog don’t display their colour anywhere except in the Edit
Categories page. (I’ve only checked the Calendar day view and the InfoLog
list, but those are the main two places where some colour would make sense)
Not as important, but you might consider it in future.

Hi Boyd,

thanks for the info, it’s fixed now in svn for 1.6 and will be in daily
snapshot from tomorrow on.

I don’t know if you consider this a bug, but I’ve found a funny behaviour
when adding alarms to existing events in the Calendar. The alarm isn’t
retained when clicking on Save. You must first click Apply and then Save or
Quit for it to remember the alarm
